Gav's Tours.

Gavin has been servicing the two Piston Bullys and had to take them for a test drive. He invited us along for the ride to enjoy the afternoon light. It was good to get off base as it seems ages since we have gone out for an adventure. The back cab of the articulated Piston Bully unfortunately has no heating and after a while we really felt the cold ( - 27) - Never mind....

We arrived at Castle Rock and climbed to the saddle which allows great views North beyond Mt Erebus. It was fantastic and looked like a golden red sun rise and to us who have not seen any natural light for over 10 weeks it was worth the climb. After a while my hands dropped off and I had to race back down to the shelter of the vehicle to glue them back on. Even with two pairs of gloves and hand warmers ( chemical sachets you stuff in your mittens) they still froze. I can not imagine what the explorers endured as the pain of my fingers warming up was really bad - crying it was so bad. You forget how dangerous the cold can be and if they only had leather boots with a stuffing of straw in the bottom for insulation - my god they must have been constantly freezing and in extreme pain - I'd be real grumpy!

Worth it!!
